Whispers of the Hills: A Soulful Journey Through Nelliyampathy

Nestled in the lush landscapes of Kerala, the journey to Nelliyampathy is a soul-stirring experience that offers a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and tranquility. Our trip began from Nenmara town, where we meandered through scenic village roads, flanked by swaying palms and verdant paddy fields. The drive itself was a soothing prelude to the wonders ahead.

At the base of the hills, we stopped at a quaint little shop selling an array of forest products, natural health remedies, and handcrafted souvenirs. Nearby, a modest yet charming restaurant caught our attention. The breakfast was delicious and affordable, a hearty meal setting the tone for the day’s adventures.

As we ascended the winding roads, the air grew crisp, and the sights became increasingly mesmerizing. The journey led us to Nelliyampathy town, a sleepy little hamlet cocooned in mist and serenity. Life moves unhurriedly here, inviting travelers to pause and soak in its peaceful rhythm.

We made our way from the town to Kesavanpara, a spectacular rock formation that overlooks the breathtaking valley where Pothundy Dam is nestled. Along the way, strategically placed watchtowers offered panoramic views of rolling hills and verdant valleys, each turn in the road revealing a new vista more enchanting than the last. Upon reaching the forest office, we parked our vehicle and took a short trek through the woods. The walk was a sensory delight—the air was alive with the calls of exotic birds, their melodies weaving a mystical atmosphere. Though entry into the hornbill habitat was restricted, the thrill of surrounded by nature’s vibrant chorus was exhilarating.

A visit to the Government Orange and Vegetable Farm was next on our itinerary. Spanning a vast 966 acres, this farm is a treasure trove of flora. Access to the display area is limited, but it is enough to enchant visitors. A riot of colors greeted us—flowers in full bloom, fruit-laden trees, and a pond covered in a carpet of crimson lotus blossoms. A charming tree hut provided the perfect perch to relax and soak in the beauty. The farm also features a sales counter where visitors can purchase fresh vegetables, seeds, plants, and delectable value-added products like squashes and jams.

Our adventurous spirits led us to a jeep safari to Minnampara. The bumpy ride over rugged terrain, strewn with rocks and ditches, was an adventure in itself. The one-hour trek to the viewpoint was rewarded with a mesmerizing panorama of majestic hills. The midday sun kept the animals hidden, though the symphony of crickets filled the air, creating an almost surreal ambience. The forest guards informed us that early morning safaris often reveal sightings of bears and even tigers, making us wish for a return visit at dawn.

Another highlight was a drive to Seetharkundu viewpoint. Though the road was rough, the view at the summit was nothing short of magical. Standing at cloud level, we felt like we were on heaven’s threshold. The short walk through the coffee plantation from the POABS shop parking lot added to the rustic charm. An unexpected yet thrilling encounter with a wild bison left us in awe—it observed us briefly before retreating into the wilderness.

Before concluding our journey, we made a delightful stop at Greenland Farm and Restaurant. Driving through the coffee plantation to reach this place was a scenic treat. The buffet breakfast was sumptuous, served in a warm and inviting ambiance. The farm also housed small pets and birds in enclosures, making it a lovely stop for families.

As the sun began to set, we took a leisurely stroll through the tea plantations, inhaling the fragrant air and basking in the tranquility only such places offer.

Our trip to Nelliyampathy was rejuvenating—an escape from the mundane into the embrace of nature. A retreat like this lingers in the heart, offering solace and memories to cherish for months.
